About This Item
Chapel Hill / Williamsburg: University of North Carolina Press for the Institute of Early American History and Culture, 1980. Scholarly account of the development of State Constitutions in the American colonies from about 1773-1780, prior to the great Federal Constitution of 1787, from a Continental point of view, which, the jacket flap assures us, allows the author a more detached analysis of the various concepts involved, including 'popular sovereighnty', 'liberty', 'equality', 'property', and 'representation'. The author was professor of North American History at the Free University of Berlin, and the book was first published in German in 1973, appearing in English after winning a Bicentennial-inspired prize for translation & publication of the best non-English book or manuscript on the era of the American Revolution. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, dent to bottom edge; jacket rubbed with minor chipping, short tear & some creasing to upper rear panel. Text clean, no names or marks; xviii, 351 pages; appendixes, bibliography, index.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Octavo.
