Rudolf is said to have confided to Pausinger six years before at Görgény that he would not succeed to the throne and he was nearly killed by a bear there in 1885. It is not clear that the proposed expedition took place. Rudolf's alienation from his father was increasing, as were the criticisms of him in the foreign press, and he would have loved to have got away.
