First edition, original publisher's green cloth over bevelled boards with elaborate gilt embossed decoration to the upper cover, all edges gilt, sepia engraved frontispiece and fifteen charming Chromolithograph Illustrations by E.V.B. - Eleanor Vere BOYLE (1825-1916, Victorian Watercolour Artist and Illustrator), boldly inscribed "Charlie - from his very affectionately Robert Browning, Christmas Eve 1867", 4to., Sampson Low, Son and Marston, Ludgate Hill, The recipient was Charles MOULTON-BARRETT (1860–1925), later Major Charles Graham Moulton-Barrett. He was the son of Octavius Butler Barrett Moulton-Barrett (1824–1910), brother of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. PROVENANCE: From the family of Octavius Moulton-Barrett (1824–1910), youngest brother of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, thence by descent.
