The Father is a play where Captain Adolph, an authority of the horse soldiers, and Laura, his wife, have a misunderstanding relating to the studies of their daughter Bertha. Her mother wants Bertha to stay at home and be an artist, but her father wants her to be a teacher. Adolph says that it is final, that the law is not against it. </br></br>Laura believes that her husband has no such rights over the issue. She talks to the family doctor that Adolph may be enraged, because as a new scientist, as Adolph studies meteorites as having organic life through a spectroscope. She also found a letter that Adolph has written, containing that he is scared he might go resentful. </br></br>Adolph is disappointed as he throws a burning lamp to his wife as she goes out.
