The title is dedicated to Caroline Graves, the first of at least two of Collins's lovers. "Fallen leaves" are the down and out, four of whom are the lead characters. They are all involved in some way with Amelius Goldenheart, the hero. A leading theme is how to create relationships which are neither exploitative nor hypocritical. 525 pp..
