About This Item
Philadelphia: Printed for H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1824. vii, [1], 36, 27, [1 blank] pp. Disbound. Separate title page and imprint for Cooper's Tract [Charleston: Printed. 1823. Philadelphia: Reprinted by Joseph R.A. Skerrett. 1824]. Each title page with a light rubberstamp number. First title page with some foxing, and several ink notations. Good+.
The protectionist Carey was the natural opponent of the free-trader Cooper. Their policy differences reflected the opposing constitutional views of the Strict Construction South and the industrial North, which sought protection for its infant industries; and, later, the differences between Jeffersonian Democrats and Whigs [later the Republicans].
This is the first of three 1824 editions.
FIRST EDITION. Cohen 10466. Sabin 10868. AI 15657 [4]. OCLC1026904553 [1- Am. Philos. Soc.] as of June 2022.
