About This Item

London: Fletcher Gyles, 1740. Full Leather. near Good binding. Large quarto. [16], 692, [24] pp., frontis. First edition. Contemporary speckled calf, double-ruled in gilt around the perimeter of the boards; leather title label on the spine. Scuffed and bumped; joints are splitting but holding; minor worming in margins, worsening in the upper margin of one hundred or so leaves, light waterstaining in upper margin of same one hundred or so leaves; very minor foxing in outer margin of a few quires.

A history of the reign of Charles II, this is the author's rejoinder to Vol. III of the Complete History of England by White Kennet (1706). "Like the other works of the same author, the Examen is valuable for the many original anecdotes it contains, and the view it presents of party politics, but as an impartial authority it cannot be relied on" (Lowndes 1703). Allibone confirms, "We cannot say we should propose Roger North as a model for the biographer to imitate; but he had the advantage of the strictest and most confidential intimacy with the subjects of his pen. . . ." (Allibone 1436). ESTC T147677.
