New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1945. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. First edition. Octavo. 72pp. Near fine with bit of dust soiling at the topedge and one page roughly opened at the foredge in a good dust jacket; jacket sunned at the chipped spine and short tears and nicks at the edges. Alfred Kazin's copy with his ink Signature on front flyleaf, dated in year of publication: "Alfred Kazin. Dec, 1945." An interesting copy, given Kazin's apparent dislike of Shapiro's writing, which Shapiro mentioned in his essay, "The Critic Outside." In it, Shapiro quotes from a letter sent by Kazin to Edmund Wilson in which Kazin says he can't bring himself to throw out Shapiro's book (*In Defense of Ignorance*) or give it to the library "for fear it would mislead the young." In the end, he's persuaded to donate it to used book shop. Apparently it wasn't the only one.
