Shellbanks: The Office of the Farmers' Register, 1835. Second Edition. Octavo (25cm). Disbound pamphlet; [i]-viii [9]-166pp; a few in-text diagrams and wood engravings. Sewing sturdy, edges gently rubbed, minor creases to first few leaves, foxed throughout: Very Good.

Ruffin was a Virginia plantation owner and senator who performed early research on soil, demonstrating the importance of using marl (calcareous earth) to rejuvenate earth exhausted by monoculture. He is also notorious as one of the first Confederate soldiers to fire on Fort Sumter in 1861, initiating the Civil War. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 34059.
