At the end of the eighteenth century John Crewe was a rich landowner and a Member of Parliament, but it was his wife, Frances Anne, who was to leave her mark in letters, diaries and memoirs. Lady Crewe, (1748-1818), was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time and was a political and social hostess with a sharp wit. She attracted to her home politicians, writers, artists, and musicians. In 1786 she kept a record of a visit to Paris. Written just after the American War of Independence and just prior to the French Revolution, the diary is full of incident, information and insight. With Appendices, Bibliography and Index. A fine copy, in a fine d/w, of the SCARCE hardback first edition, first printing. NO inscriptions, underlining or highlighting.. First Edition, First Printing. Hardback. Fine/Fine.
