BURKE, Thomas (1886-1945)

The English Inn.

London, New York, Toronto : Longmans, Green and Co, September 1931. Illustrated edition.  First printed May 1930.  Printed by Northumberland Press Limited, Newcastle upon Tyne.  Introduction by A P Herbert; photography by Will F Taylor; frontispiece illustration by Edmond C Warre.

Octavo (200x140mm) original publisher's blue linen grain cloth boards, top edges blue, gilt lettered spine xii,186,[2]pp. Twenty-four out-of-text monochrome photographs, four in-text maps. Lacks dust jacket;  edges lightly toned; end-papers and half title lightly foxed.

Burke wrote several books on English pubs and inns during the 1920s and 1930s.  The English Inn was his most significant work.  It tells the history of approximately 180 traditional and historic inns and public houses across Great Britain, woven with tales of skittles, shovel boards and darts, good beer, good hospitality and good cheer.

An enchanting view of the iconic British institution. A nice copy.
