Ford Lectures for 1943: the author discusses trade & intellectual discourse in the age of Bede, including relations between England and the Church of Rome, the Frisian Mission, Boniface and the reform of the Frankish Church, Pippin, Charles the Great, Alcuin, Lullus; he argues that this period saw England's greatest influence on the continent until the industrial revolution. Levison was a distiguished German medievalist at Bonn University until forced to flee Hitler's Germany; he then taught at Durham University in England until his death in 1947. Hardcover in jacket as pictured; the fourth printing. Book shows some wear, light rubbing & scuffing; jacket chipped with small stains & scuffs, larger stains & scuffs to the spine.
