The first edition, first impression of Greene's work, in the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper.Set in London during and after the Second World War, the novel follows the obsessive and passionate relationship of rising writer Maurice Bendrix, and Sarah Miles, the wife of a prominent civil servant.Examining the contradictions of Greene's Catholic faith, it was the fourth and final instalment of Greene's tetralogy of Catholic novels, following Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, and The Heart of the Matter. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Light bumping to spine head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Discolouration to dust wrapper back strip and wrap perimeters. Loss to back strip tail, with small loss to back strip head. Light closed tears to head of rear wrap. Small tape reinforcements to dust wrapper reverse at back strip head and tail. Significant closed tear to fold of front flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, but clean. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Graham Greene (1904-1991) worked as a journalist and critic, and was later employed by the foreign office. His many books include The Power and the Glory , The Third Man , Our Man in Havana , The Comedians and Travels with My Aunt . He is the subject of an acclaimed three-volume biography by Norman Sherry. From the Trade Paperback edition.
