Yonge was a pioneering map librarian who was curator of maps for the American Geographical Society from 1917 to 1962. During her tenure the collection's holdings increased by more than 200, 000 items. Yonge's career spanned a transformation in the profession of map librarianship, as Yonge remade herself and her position from the status of clerical worker into a respected expert. Yonge's metamorphosis was part of a larger transformation in map librarianship that Yonge herself helped to shape. In the first half of the 20th century the profession of librarian was increasingly populated with women. In particular map librarianship evolved into a profession with associated organizations, standards, and scholarly publications. Nordis Felland (1901-1985) was first employed at the AGS as a cataloger in 1927. At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years.
