From the dust jacket: "This book is the first critical discussion of a poet who not only wrote nine books of poems and prose, but who, for twenty years was Thoreau's closest friend and who became his first biographer. The book analyzes Channing's career and life to show the tensions and values that led him to write for half a century. Channing's themes expresses in his poems and prose are examined in detail to show how thoroughly he understood his society and how he helped advance an ideal of pastoral simplicity in the face of growing American materialism. The author discusses at length the importance of the theme of friendship among Concord writers and shows how Channing personally played the role of friend for a diverse group which includes Hawthorne, Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, Thoreau, and Emerson. Finally, the author reassesses the relationship between Channing and the Transcendental movement… The biographical portion of ELLERY CHANNING draws heavily on unpublished letters and journals.".
