New York: George H Doran Company,, [1922]. First US edition in this format, first printing, of what is "by general consent, Nielsen's most spectacular and celebrated book" (Dalby, p. 90). "This beautiful volume has been reprinted many times up to the present day... Nielsen's unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations" (ibid.). The edition was preceded by a large format edition in 1914. Quarto. Original yellow cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red, orange illustrated endpapers. Illustrated title page, tipped-in colour frontispiece, 24 colour plates, black and white illustrations to text. Very light dulling to cloth and rubbing at extremities, slight separation between some gatherings; a near-fine copy. Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, 2002.
