About This Item
London: John Murray, 1890. Eighth Thousand. Full-Leather. Very Good.. Tall Octavo. Smooth brown calf, blind decoration in Cambridge style, gilt-stamped coat of arms of King's Lynn town, marbled endpapers, bevelled edges, all edges stained red. DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING: Fanned one way reveals Cambridge University, fanned the other way reveals Oxford. The red staining to the fore-edge brilliantly adds to the art of the fore-edge painting giving the sky in both paintings the glow of dusk (or perhaps dawn). Pp. xcvii, 307. Light rubbing to the margins of the covers, expertly rebacked with orginal spine laid-down, Prize bookplate of King's Lynn Grammar School, dated 1891, otherwise a very good, clean, crisp copy, with a rare double fore-edge painting utilizing the red fore-edge stain as a part of the artwork.
