Frances Margaret (Madge) Fox (1870 – 1959) is most well-known for her Little Bear series but she published her first book in 1901, which was the first of fifty books and numerous articles for magazines she wrote over the course of her career. From an unhappy childhood in Mackinaw City, Michigan to life with the Joslyn family in Bay City, she went on to love the Mackinac area, later building a stone house on the Straits of Mackinac that she named "Happy Landing." She spent her summers in Mackinac and winters in Washington D.C. conducting research at the Library of Congress, where she was one of the few researchers of her time allowed access to the stacks.
