About This Item
A little foxing here and there, and some fraying of the spine heads and heels, but all pages clean and tight. One foldout has two small tears.
Arguably the greatest diary in English by possibly the world's greatest diarist. This is Henry B Wheatley's 1896/1897 10-volume publication (the diary in 8 volumes, plus the index published in 1924 and the Pepysiana published in 1928). This is the diary the world knew until Robert Latham's and William Matthews' nine-volume definitive edition of 1970-1983.
These eight volumes of the diary belonged to and bear the bookplates of Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1859-1909), eldest son of Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna and a cousin of Emperor Alexander III of Russia. He was a Major General in the Russian Army, a skilled musician and the founder of the Mecklenburg Quartet.
