When he first began work on deontology, an ethical theory that uses rules to distinguish right from wrong, Bentham divided the subject into private and public realms. His work on public ethics eventually became his massive, unfinished Constitutional Code, while his work on private deontology was published posthumously here, arranged by Bowring, editor of the Westminster Review. Two volumes, octavo (211 x 133 mm). Contemporary half sheep, spines lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Bound without errata slip in vol. I. Extremities worn with slight splits to joints, still firm, contents clean; a very good copy. Chuo D5.
