Original blue bead-grained cloth, blocked in black and gold, front inner hinge very slightly cracking, else fine copy. First edition of this version of the Novel bound from the 25 weekly parts, each with a full plate on text paper. 16 pp. publisher's catalogue, undated but 1874. 1 vols. 8vo. The original version of this murder story with an American setting was published as a triple decker in 1873, and the author, being dissatisfied with it, has here rewritten it.

Irish born adventurer, soldier, and novelist Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-1883) tramped the west with Audubon, befriended Edgar Allan Poe, distinguished himself in the Mexican War, where he was wounded in the thigh. He returned to Europe to join the revolution in Bavaria in 1848, then settled in England and began a flourishing literary career. He lived extravagantly, and only the success of an 1866 novel The Headless Horseman saved him from poverty. Late in life he was crippled by the recurrence of his war wound; "friends helped him obtain back-pay and a pension from the American army" (ODNB). Wolff 5733a
