About This Item
Norwalk, CT: Silvermine Publishers, (1970). First Edition. First printing, cloth issue. Small octavo (21.5cm); tan sized linen, titled in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [11],12-106pp. Fine and unmarked, in the original dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $4.95 on front flap), rubbed and with a couple of tiny chips to extremities, Very Good.
Murray's only published book of poetry, collecting poems mostly written during the Great Depression, between her graduation from Hunter College in 1933 and her matriculation at Howard University Law School in 1941. Though clearly a poet of real promise - she published work regularly through the thirties in such periodicals as Common Ground, Crisis, and Opportunity - Murray chose instead to pursue a legal career; her 1950 work, States' Laws on Race and Color was called "The Bible of the Civil Rights Movement" by Thurgood Marshall. The current work was issued simultaneously in cloth and paperback; the cloth issue, in our experience, is exceedingly uncommon in the marketplace, this being only the second copy we've handled or seen in twenty-five years.
