About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Daniel Boone was a fine hunter, discoverer, surveyor, and exceptional rifleman; he understood Indians and battle them with such a talent. His existence was full of adventures and, with this life story, Reuben Gold Thwaites brings us on many of those exciting ventures. A wonderful book of some of America?s real historical brave men.

Reuben Gold Thwaites was a United States historical author. He was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. His parents were William George and Sarah Bibbs Thwaites, who had resided to Dorchester in 1850 from Yorkshire, England. The family settled to Omro, Wisconsin in 1866 where Reuben toiled on the farmland, went to college-level coursework and worked for the Oshkosh Times. In 1874-75 he took English Literature, Economic History and International Law at Yale University. Reuben went to Yale as a special student, and after that never previously studied at the collegiate level, though he was still given an award, an LLD from the University of Wisconsin.

For ten years, Reuben became the managing editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, at Madison. He also became Assistant Corresponding Secretary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and when Lyman Draper retired as Secretary 1887, Reuben was designated to take over him. While directing the historical society he edited volumes XI-XIX of the Wisconsin Historical Collections , The Jesuit Relations, Early Western Travels, 1748-1846, and Original Journals of Lewis and Clark. He also wrote innumerable dissertations and monographs such as a memoir of Daniel Boone, a biography of Father Marquette, and a history of colonial North America.

Reuben is ascribed with nurturing the scholarship encompassing the Lewis and Clark excursion to the latest level. Prior to the editions that were issued under his leadership, general knowledge and important scholarship were for the very part incumbered by legend.
