About This Item
NY,: The Dibdin Club, Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1901, 12mo, 32 numbered pages, plus a blank leaf bound between each numbered page, (I've never seen this before, and don't know why it was done, perhaps for adding one's own notes), boards. Most of the backstrip is missing, internally clean. As is, a good working copy, or have it rebacked if desired, inner front hinge reinforced at the title page. Limited to 250 cc, this number 106. Ex-lib, non-circulating, with the bookplate of Ursuline College and Msgr. F. N. Pitt. Fr. Felix N. Pitt, who served as the superintendent of Catholic schools in Louisville, Kentucky, had a tremendous collection of Kentucky books. He lived at the Ursuline Motherhouse, serving as senior chaplain, and that's where his books were kept. Upon his death in 1971, the books were willed to the sisters. The archdiocese intervened on the grounds that Fr. Pitt's property was their property; but, after some legal wrangling, the nuns were successful in proving ownership. Shortly thereafter, a dutiful sister librarian began cataloguing the books and placing bookplates and other library markings to separate Fr. Pitt's books from their own library holdings. Of course, she didn't realize she was devaluing the collection. Very few of Fr. Pitt's books, seem to have actually circulated in the system, but were kept in Fr. Pitt's previous private quarters. Several years later, I was called upon by the sisters, who were then struggling financially, to sell the collection. A few were sold, but about this time, it came to the attention of Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) that the books would be perfect for one of their collections. Coincidentally, Fr. Pitt had been the recipient of the first honorary degree ever given by Bellarmine. Eventually they bought the collection..
