Publisher's one-half black pebbled morocco & marbled paper over bevel edged boards, the spines in five compartments separated by raised bands, lettered & decorated in gilt. Text in two columns.
Edges & joints rubbed, hinges cracked at pastedowns of volume I & front free endpaper of volume II which also has a brief, old tape repair, text moderately toned, otherwise Good.

Illustrated with 24 portraits on steel and hundreds of wood engravings. ~ 3 cm closed tear to outer hinge of volume 2. Rubbing to outer hinges and edges of boards on both volumes. Internally nice.

Bound in contemporary dark brown half morocco and marbled paper-covered boards, gilt decorated spines with raised bands, all edges marbled. Each volume illustrated with an added engraved title page, steel engraved portrait plates, and numerous wood-engravings in text. Owner's bookplate on the front paste downs, moderate wear at the board edges and corners, about near fine. A bright, handsome set, uncommon in this condition.
