London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1889. xxxvii, pp 166 Popular edition, in publisher's brown cloth. Laid in blue compliments slip printed 'I am, SIR, Your obedient Servant,........ H.M Inspector of Schools' and signed in ink by Matthew Arnold. The book is very good, the cloth is clean, lightly rubbed to spine ends and corners, edges dusty, a few spots to the gutters within the text, occasional annotations in pencil, no ownership inscription. Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 15 April 1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. 1889
