La Cuisine Creole: a collection of creole recipes from leading chefs and noted Creole housewives, who have made New Orleans famous for its cuisine

New Orleans : F. F. Hansell & Bro., Ltd, undated ,circa 1903 or 1922, © 1885.  Stated "Second Edition", but maybe third edition².  Printed by L Graham Co., Ltd, New Orleans.

Octavo (205x140mm) orange cloth boards, gilt lettered and decorated spine and upper board, iii,[1],268pp. Quires unsigned; horizontal chain lines. Lacks any pictorial illustration to front board; boards lightly soiled, edges lightly worn; front hinge starting but firm; sticker mark to front paste-down, colour pencil mark to front free endpaper.

Traveler and writer Lafcadio Hearn lived in New Orleans, from 1877 to 1887.  During this time, he wrote widely about the culture of New Orleans including its cuisine.  The anonymous publication, in 1885, of this collection of recipes coincided with the 1884-85 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, and played a significant role in introducing Creole cuisine to the world as a distinct American regional cuisine.

Scarce.  A nice copy of an important early reference on the Creole cuisine of New Orleans.

§  This variant apparently not recorded in OCLC, but this copy consistent with the digital copy of the copy held by the Radcliffe College Library (https://archive.org/details/lacuisinecreole00heargoog/page/n6/mode/2up.)
