About This Item

New York, New York USA: Pantheon Books/Random House, 1966. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Hardcover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7. Pantheon Books/Random House, 1966. Hardcover Book Club Ex-Library Book and Jacket in Good Condition. Translated from the French By Anne Carter. Fifty-one b/w illustrations, six maps. Zoe Oldenbourg's masterpiece of this period in history, which clarifies much that was obscure about the Crusades, and a very realistic look at the Middle Ages. Clean, tight and solid book with usual lib marks with pocket and card. Bound in gray cloth w/silver titles and red decoration. Edges rubbed. Rough cut. Pages very clean and completely unmarked. Jacket is clean with slight edgewear. Oldenbourg analyzes the currents and ideas that motivated the Crusades. Although she gives due prominence to economic and social factors, she regards them as distinctly secondary. Not poverty or unemployment, but the desperate expression of a warrior cult, the very real possibility of progressively suicidal wars among Western Europeans, led the Pope and leading nobles to seek an outside enemy. The Crusades were not Christian Wars. Oldenbourg's historical approach give the Crusades a new and relevant dimension. xviii, 650 pp inc. Genealogical Table, Chronology, Notes, Bibliography & Index. 5.75 x 8.5 inches. Pantheon Books/Random House, 1966, New York, USA
