Scarce journal of the travels of the HMS Narcissus to South America, South Africa, India, Singapore and the China Sea.
"The 'Cruise of the Narcissus' with the Detached Squandron has been written with the view to chronicle events in connection with the Squadron. It makes no pretensions to literary merit, but is simply a Journal of the proceedings of the longest and most varied Cruise ever taken on by the so called Flying Squadrons" (Preface). The ship departed from Plymouth at the end of September 1874, travelling to Monte Video and the Falklands, before proceeding back across the Atlantic, and cruising the west coast of Africa to Gibralter before returning south around the Cape of Good Hope to Bombay, Calcutta and Ceylon. Visits to Singapore, Hong Kong Woosung, Nagasaki, Chifu ensued before returning back via Mauritius, around the Cape of Good Hope, arriving back in Plymouth in May 1877.
