He graduated from Durham University in 1966 with honors in physics and psychology and worked in the US, Chile, and France before becoming a partner in a multinational management consultancy based in London. He is also the author of The Crimean War (Tempus, 2007). Hugh is widowed with two daughters and four grandchildren.
