An early Modern Library reprint edition offering the first novel of Anatole France, pen name of François-Anatole Thibault. Translated from the French, and with an introduction by Lafcadio Hearn. The author had worked as a poet and journalist before trying his hand at prose, a choice which was met with success. --- In Toledano spine #2 / green leatherette ("Croftleather") limp boards / spine with gilt titling & horizontal bars / gilt Modern Library-BL device to cover / Brodzky illustrated M-L endpapers / lacks the dust jacket. Fall 1921 date appears at list of ML titles at rear of volume. ML #22.1. --- A well-preserved copy, though with signature of prior owner to half title page, otherwise unmarked and tightly-bound.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); xii, 281, (8, ads) pages .
