About This Item

London: Arts Council of Great Britain, 1987. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Trade paperback. Good. 368 pages. Includes Chronology. Checklist of works in the exhibition. General bibliography. This is the catalogue of a centenary exhibition organized by the Arts Council of Great Britain in collaboration with the Foundation Le Corbusier, Paris held at the Hayward Gallery, London 2 March - 7 June 1987. This is a heavy item and if sent outside of the United States will require additional shipping charges. Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (6 October 1887 - 27 August 1965), known as Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer, who was one of the pioneers of modern architecture. He became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades, in which he designed buildings in Europe, Japan, India, as well as North and South America. He considered that "the roots of modern architecture are to be found in Viollet-le-Duc". Dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities, Le Corbusier was influential in urban planning, and was a founding member of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Le Corbusier prepared the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India, and contributed specific designs for several buildings there, especially the government buildings. On 17 July 2016, seventeen projects by Le Corbusier in seven countries were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement. Some of his urban planning ideas have been criticized for their indifference to pre-existing cultural sites, societal expression and equality. Extremely comprehensive with chapters on Six Houses (including Villa Fallet, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Villa Savoye, Villa Schwab etc), Furniture, The Architect as Artist, Great Projects, Urbanism, The Sacred and the Search for Myths (incl. Notre-Dame du Haut Ronchamp, Monastery of Sainte-Marie de la Tourette etc), India, Firminy-Vert. Contains essays by William Curtis, Colin Rowe, Kenneth Frampton, Adrian Forty, Tom Benton, Christopher Green, Charlotte Benton, Sunand Prasad, and Judi Loach.
