Second UK edition, first UK edition was published in 1872. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, one map and two folding maps to the rear, with many in-text images. Collated complete. A detailed and comprehensive study of corals and coral islands, with chapters on the structure of reefs and islands, the formulation of coral and their features, the geographical distribution of reefs and islands, changing sea levels, and more, with geological conclusions. Written by James Dwight Dana, an American geologist, mineralogist, volcanologist, and zoologist. Publisher's catalogue to the rear. Bound by Burn & Co. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and the odd small mark to the boards. Minor fading to the spine with a library sticker to the tail of the spine. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Light spotting to the endpapers. Brighton and Sussex Natural History Society bookplate to the front pastedown. Bound by Burn & Co.
