About This Item

London: printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown,, 1817. Explaining the ideas of Smith, Malthus, and Ricardo to a young audience Second edition of Marcet's popular work on economics, designed for the use of schools. Taking the format of a dialogue between a female teacher and pupil, the two explore the concepts of capital, labour, property, commerce and money, in a casual conversational style readily understandable by the book's youthful audience. At a time when the discipline was generally deemed to be the preserve of men, Marcet's work proved highly popular, undergoing numerous editions and helping to popularise the study of economics. Macaulay wrote that "every girl who has read Mrs. Marcet's little dialogues on political economy could teach Montagu or Walpole many lessons in finance". Octavo (188 x 115 mm). Rebound in recent brown paper-backed cream paper-covered boards, preserving the original paper spine label and much of the original spine, edges uncut. Preserving the original flyleaves and the 4-page publisher's advertisements. Contents browned and spotted, pencil annotation to margin of p. 149, else a very good copy. Carpenter XXXVI (2); Goldsmiths' 21726.
