About This Item
Fountaingrove [Santa Rosa, CA], 1894. Hardcover. 218p., bound in red clothbound bevelled boards with gold trim and lettering, some edge wear, fore edges all foxed, else good condition. First edition. Written and published at the Fountaingrove Community, where Harris had established a successful utopian community that had, at its high point, some 1700 acres under cultivation. They also ran one of the first vineyards in the Sonoma/Napa county area. Local allegations of free love activities forced Thomas Lake Harris to flee the community in 1896. The early Japanese immigrant Kanaye Nagasawa, one of the founders of the local wine industry, was a member of the community, and typesetting for Fountaingrove was done by another Japanese American, known as Arai, according to Robert V. Hine in his book "California's Utopian Colonies.
