Stated 5th edition. 11 x 8.5 inches, softcover, good with soil and light surface stains to covers, contents a bit toned and with pencil annotations and marks throughout. 64 pp. Very uncommon in the trade and only a handful in institutions according to Worldcat. Downes, who died in 1976 at the age of 78, was a Navy commander. During the Depression in Pittsburgh he would give bridge lessons at downtown department stores.

The wraps are in good minus condition with light creases rubbing, and soiling. The softcover book has some stains, a few dog eared pages and page 51 has a tiny tear on the top of the page, otherwise all pages are free from rips, tears, bends and writing. There is a vintage newspaper clipping on "New Bridge Rules" that the previous owner has pasted to the front inside wrap. The stapled binding is tight and strong. There are excellent black and white illustrations through out the book.
