About This Item

Thorndike Pr, 1998. First English Language Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7? - 9?" tall. Large Print Hardcover Ex-Library Book in Good Condition, without Jacket. Pictorial brown and burgundy board, light wear to corners, clean, unmarked, tight & solid. Pages in Fine Condition. Rear endpapers have spot near bottom edge. Protagonist Hugh Mathews is a young foreign service officer in the Congo, coping with his embassy's ineptitude and its shallow-thinking bureaucrats and has to come to terms with the confusion of feuding tribes and rebel factions living in the all but impenetrable wilderness surrounding the capital. Characters abound, featuring petty dictators, CIA operatives and a sorcerer who summons lightning from the sky--all set against the era of America's increasing involvement in Vietnam a half a world away. It is also a love story. 8vo. 327 pages. 1998, Thorndike Press.
