About This Item

English History 701 Napier, William Francis Patrick, 1785-1860. The conquest of Scinde: with some introductory passages in the life of Major-General Sir Charles James Napier. Two volumes. London: T. & W. Boone, 1845, 531p, continuous pagination, 2 folded maps, 3 folded plans. This set is ex-library with the usual ex-library treatment, stamps, bookplates, etc. Hole on front free endpaper of Part I. It looks like no one ever checked this out of the library, probably because the librarian has catalogued the wrong book. The spines have been repaired with black tape (?), marbled paper over boards. (It looks as if the paper is over the tape/cloth and not vice versa but the lettering is hand done and very clumsy. Possible that the black spines were original cloth and then shellacked after the lettering had worn off.) Another problem: It calls for 2 folded maps and 3 folded plans. The three folded plans are here, in Part II, in good shape but have small library stamp on them. There are also two maps, with stamps, one in Part I and another in Part II. One map in Part I, "Explanatory Sketch of Scinde", has been replicated in Part II. These are not large maps or plans, page size or a little bigger. My favorite story about Sind is about the 19th century British general Charles Napier, (the brother of William Napier) who was told that he was not to invade Sind. The temptation to conquer more land for the Raj was too much and he did enter and conquer Sind. He now had to report back to London why he disregarded the order. His cable back to London was one word: "Peccavi". (I have sinned/Sind). Very clever. The two volumes, as is: $135.00
