The London and New York Printing and Publishing Company, 1880. First Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall. 3 volumes, complete as issued. Attractively bound in 3/4 dark red morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and gilt floral tooling within gilt-ruled compartments, marbled edges and endpapers (general light rubbing; scattered foxing). A solid, visually appealing set. Title on spines: Shakspere's Works; half-titles: William Shakespere's Works. 'With a memoir, and essay on his genius, by Barry Cornwall; historical and critical studies of Shakspere's text, characters, and commentators; with annotations and introductory remarks on the plays, by Richard Grant White, A. M., R. H. Horne, and various other distinguished writers; illustrated with engravings on wood, from designs by Kenny Meadows; and 100 steel plates, portraits of eminent actors, etc' (title page, volume 1). Includes a glossary (volume 3); plus numerous bibliographical references. See BMC, volume 23, page 261, column 27 for a similarly titled set from the same publisher (tentatively dated 1875-1880; this particular set is not dated). Engraved Plates, b/w Illustrations.
