This edition of the poems is well worth owning. Although now a little dated (1941, Reprinted 1961) its publication was a landmark event in the history of the publication of Emily Bronte's poems. G. W. Hatfield spent many years evaluating the manuscripts of many of the poems and correcting many errors that had been incorporated into previous editions. The volume gives a very helpful historical introduction providing an evaluation of the difficulties experienced by him and previous editors. In addition it adds an account of ‘The Gondal Story’ and a chronology of the related poems by Fanny Ratchford. The layout is clear and inviting for the reader, however, there is no commentary on the text itself, simply an indication of the lines where the reading has been amended from previous printed editions.
