About This Item

New York, New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co, 1874. An early printing, copyright 1871. Hardcover. Good, from the Winterthur library, with back cover label, bookplate, envelope inside back cover, several cataloguing notations pencilled in non-text locations. Page edges sharp.. Brown library buckram boards with original reddish brown cover laid down (glued), no dust jacket. 556 pp. Unillustrated. Good index. Age-old advice on food handling and preparation, with recipes, including foods less customary to our times: pigeon pie, pig's head, ragout of squirrel. And then the more usual and the extraordinary, with a historic flavor: "black or wedding cake, with currants, which "if kept in a cool, dry place will not spoil in two months." More treasures await the reader.
