New York: The Century co., 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/None. Signed. SIGNED by Woollcott, inscribed to Minnie Dupree, American stage, film, and radio actress. Yellow cloth boards, rubbed, edgeworn and moderately soiled; Spine is darkened, ends are frayed, and there is a carat-shaped 1/4-in. tear mid-spine. Front hinge is broken but still attached (barely). Binding is otherwise sound. Title page has some splotches of age-toning. Interior is unmarked. 8vo. BOOK INFO: Woollcott (January 19, 1887 ? January 23, 1943) was an American book and theater critic and commentator for The New Yorker magazine and a member of the Algonquin Round Table. He was the inspiration for Sheridan Whiteside, the main character in the play The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939) by Kaufman and Hart; in the west coast production, Woollcott played Whiteside, and it at lease one production, he performed alongside Minnie Dupree. In April 1917, the day after WWI was declared, Woollcott volunteered as a private in the medical corps. Posted overseas, Woollcott was a sergeant when the intelligence section of the American Expeditionary Forces of the U.S. Army selected him and a half-dozen other newspaper men to create the Stars and Stripes, an official newspaper to bolster troop morale.\nIllustrated with 16 B&W drawings by Pvt.
