About This Item

New York: Dial Press, 1964. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First American edition (published in the UK in 1932). Illustrated by Charles Saxon. Boards a bit overall toned, very good or better in very good dust jacket with light toning on the spine and a small smudge on the front panel. A spectacularly sly and amusing novel about a suddenly orphaned gentlewoman forced to live among her hopelessly rustic extended family in the country. The novel is the genesis for the oft-repeated phrase: "There's something nasty in the woodshed." Basis for an underrated and delicious 1995 film directed by John Schlesinger, and featuring Kate Beckinsale in one of her earliest starring roles, with splendid support from Stephen Fry, Freddie Jones, Joanna Lumley, Ian McKellen, and several others. A surprisingly uncommon edition.

Synopsis

Cold Comfort Farm is a comic novel by Stella Gibbons, published in 1932. It parodies the romanticised, sometimes doom-laden accounts of rural life popular at the time, by writers such as Mary Webb. Gibbons was working for the Evening Standard in 1928 when they decided to serialise Webb's first novel, The Golden Arrow, and had the job of summarising the plot of earlier installments. Other novelists in the tradition parodied by Cold Comfort Farm are D. H.
