London: Constable, 1925. First. Hard Cover. First edition. Quarto sized in orange cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Color frontispiece of Joseph Grimaldi in full make up and costume; 0ver 50 monochrome plates. The history of clowns, harlequins, pantomimes and similar entertainers from ancient times to the early 20th century. Includes chapters on such famous historical clowns as Grimaldi, Pantaloon, Deburau and Grock and sections on music-hall comedians, circus clowns pantomimes, etc. A very handsome work, near fine, all gilt bright, with a bit of very light occasional soiling to the cloth, a bit of spine fade and a small chip to the lower rear inner corner.
