About This Item

New York: Atheneum Books, 1988. First American Edition. First Printing. very good, good. 367, illus., footnotes, sources, select bibliography, index, minor edge soiling, slight wear, soiling, and edge chips to DJ. Biography of Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, noted historian and statesman in England in the 17th century. The Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) played a leading part in restoring the monarchy in England in 1660. Clarendon originally sided with Parliament in its dispute with King Charles I, who tried to keep all political power for himself. But when civil war broke out in 1642, Clarendon joined the Royalists (supporters of the king). No biographer has hitherto made use of Clarendon's immense correspondence to reveal how the private side of this man consistently underscores his public commitment to a politics founded on the precepts of integrity, loyalty, and fellowship.
