New York: Bonanza Books, n.y.. Hardcover. 4to. Grey/pale blue cloth with blue spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 342pp. Extensive illustrations. Near fine/near fine. Bright and tight reprint edition of this survey first published in 1958, largely "Leslie's" and "Harper's" image collections. Nice copy of this standard fare -- with a twist! Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Blay, 1p, 4¼" X 6½". New York, NY, 4 December 1958. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Civil War/Lincoln scholar). Near fine. To this founding member and officer of the New York Civil War Round Table, Blay writes: "I appreciate your thoughtfulness in asking me to attend the 75th meeting of The Civil War Round Table of New York, and shall be on hand." Signed in blue ballpoint. Blay (?-1991) was a noted writer and picture editor whose best-known books are this book and its sequel, "After the Civil War: America from 1865-1900" (1960). NEVINS II, 5.
