About This Item

Carbonnek [New York]: Privately Printed for the Society of Pantagruelists [Boni & Liveright]., 1923.. Large crown octavo, original blue boards with vellum paper spine lettered and decorated in gilt and ruled in blind, blue endpapers, all edges untrimmed. [332] pp, a few line-drawings in the text. Issued in an edition limited to 1050 numbered copies printed for subscribers, all signed by Arthur Machen, this being copy No. 489. Machen has written an eleven-page Introduction specially for this New Edition, which appears only here. Very neat and attractive Ex-Libris of Oscar Taylor Blackburn, Minneapolis, Minnesota, tipped to rear paste-down. A few minor stress-marks to spine panel, lower rear corner bumped with slight loss of paper; a near fine copy. Goldstone & Sweetser No 4b.

¶ Originally issued in London, 1888. Despite the statement "Now for the first time done into English", this is not a translation but an original work of Machen's written under the influence of Balzac's 'Contes Drolatiques'; Rabelais; and his home country, Gwent. He meant it to be a 'great romance'; but one can be very optimistic at the age of twenty-two.
