The Charges Issuing Forth of the Crown Revenue of England, And..

by Haward, Lazarus

  • Used
1660. A Treatise on the Sources of Royal Revenue Owned by an Important Sixteenth-Century Book Collector Haward, Lazarus. The Charges Issuing Forth of the Crown Revenue of England, And Dominion of Wales. With the Several Officers of His Majesties Courts, Customs, Housholds, Houses, Castles, Towns of War, Forts, Bulwarks, Forrests, Parks, Chases, With Their Several Fees and Allowances, According to the Ancient Establishment of the Kingdom. And also the Valuation of the Bishops, And Deanes Lands, With the Tenths Paid Out of the Same. London: Printed for M. Wright, At the Signe of the Kings Head in the Old Bailey, 1660. [viii], 55, [1] pp. Quarto (7-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in later three-quarter sheep over marbled boards, gilt fillets, title and date to spine. Light rubbing and minor fading to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, spine ends and corners bumped and very lightly worn, later armorial bookplate (of John Newling) to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing and soiling in a few places, horizontal crease to title page, which has an early ownership signature ("Will. Boothby") and small mark at its head. $350. * Second and final edition, one of two issues, both in 1660, the year of the Restoration. This was an estimable, empirical effort to outline the sources of royal revenue, beginning with that of the Royal courts. First published in 1647, and based on the correct assumption that the monarchy would be restored, it suggested a basis for the revival of England's economy following the costs of the civil war. This copy was owned by the seventeenth-century antiquarian and book collector Sir William Boothby [bap.1367-1707]. His impressive private library spanned a wide range of topics and amounted to nearly six thousand volumes. English Short-Title Catalogue R202381.
