Rare separately-issued offprint of an early work by Turner on the fur trade, preceding his famed frontier thesis. The work began as his master's thesis, presented before the State Historical Society of Wisconsin at its 1889 annual meeting, and subsequently first printed by the Historical Society that year. The present enlarged edition followed in 1891.
