About This Item

London: Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, 1883. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". J Veyrassat; Karl Bodmer. An extremely smart observational commentary on domesticated and wild animals by British artist, Philip Gilbert Hamerton. The fourth edition of this work. Illustrated, with eight engraved plates after J Veyrassat and Karl Bodmer. To this work, Hamerton discusses his love of animals. He states to the preface that 'I wrote these chapters, describing what I had seen rather than what other writers had recorded'. He has chapters on horses, dogs, wolves, cats, animals in art and birds. With the crest and motto of the Sneyd family of Keele Hall to the front board. Keele Hall is a 19th century mansion house at Keele, Staffordshire. Gift inscription to the front endpaper, 'Baron Cyril Oldham Hichens, Honoris Causa, D D Robertus S Macdonald, 1887'. A charming work, with very bright illustrations. In a full calf binding. With the crest and motto of the Sneyd family to the front board. Externally, very smart with light shelfwear to the joints and extremities. Fading to the spine. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages, otherwise pages are very clean. Very Good Indeed
